The Challenge: The Paradox of Professional Success
When this client approached me, they had been let down by coaches who tried to get them to commit to rigid workouts, diets and activity levels. Which, in a vacuum, certainly makes sense. However, when such a plan meets with a consultant at the top of their game, it becomes a source of frustration.

They wanted to return to their former athletic self, but the reality was a logistical nightmare. Three different countries a week, varying hotel gyms and a calendar packed with high-stakes social dining, where saying “No” was just bad for business.
They needed a strategy that allowed them to have their cake and eat it, too. Literally. Sweet treats were a kind of family tradition, and he didn’t want to let them go.
Alright then.
“Robert knows exactly when to push and keeps it simple and effective rather than having a strong bias from narrow experience.”
The Strategy: Designing a ‘Locale-Independent’ System
Since we couldn’t rely on the perfect kitchen and single ingredients, nor would we ever know what each gym would look like, we built a strategic framework instead of a rigid plan.
· Calorie-Independent Tracking: Because weighing hotel food is impossible, and it would raise a few eyebrows when trying to close business, we instead audited their habits to identify ‘high-friction’ choices – number of sweet treats, hidden fats, and alcohol. This allowed us to build a nutritional profile that allowed them to make objective decisions without a scale.
· Tactical Socialising: For weeks with back-to-back client dinners, willpower had to be replaced with research. Looking ahead at local restaurants and menus ahead of time to find the ‘path of least resistance’. We identified areas where we could implement swaps, keep calories low intuitively, and sought local low-calorie alcohol to maintain a professional focus and low caloric intake.
· Adaptive Training: We moved away from equipment-dependent workouts to a modular structure that could be performed in a 5-star hotel gym or a basic studio. Underpinned by non-negotiable steps and cardio targets to maintain that metabolic floor.
The Outcome: Unexpected MS Teams ROI
One of our initial metrics was a number on the scale. This allowed us to assess how successful our intuitive swaps were, alongside other physical metrics. However, after a while, we removed the target weight and deadline, and simply enjoyed the physical fruits of our labour.
Within months, they had managed to shift their body fat percentage, improve their physical fitness (even with jet lag!) and build a frame that commanded a different kind of presence.
Whilst their partner and friends were complimentary, the biggest sign that the habits were working was one of their client calls. They noticed how their shirt was filling out across the chest and arms in their Teams window. And accidentally distracted themselves from the call and had to be pulled back in!
The Final BRIDGE: Working Myself Out of a Job
By the end of six months, they no longer needed me to tell them what to do. They had mastered:
· Intuitive Pivoting: They were able to look at a week of travel and proactively ‘re-shape’ their expectations and habits.
· Overcoming Plateaus: Beforehand, a plateau had been a source of anxiety. Now they’ve gained the psychological confidence to interrogate their own data and navigate the coming weeks without falling off the wagon.
· Perspective Shifting: They moved from a ‘deadline’ mindset (losing x kgs by June) to a ‘practice’ mindset. Managing to find a pace of progress that didn’t impact the joy of it all.
Your schedule is unique. Your strategy should be, too.
